Addiction Hypnotherapy

An addiction is an obsessive, uncontrollable and often harmful attachment to an activity, behaviour or substance.

There are ma wide variety of addictions, and alongside the more recognised addictions of alcohol, drugs – there have been some very new appearances; such as addiction to social media, or smartphone use. Gambling, porn, food, hair pulling, eating disorders, workaholism, spending money – you name it – whatever your addiction if it something you do regularly, is detrimental to your life and you cannot stop yourself no matter what, you are addicted.

Addiction means that you have no control over taking, doing or using something. Typically an addiction begins as a small and perhaps harmless occasional habit – a behavioural pattern that is not particularly damaging. Over time it can escalate, becoming more powerful and advanced, eventually interfering with and destroying a person’s quality of life.

Recognising you may be addicted is a hugely important step towards getting help – clients often find it difficult to acknowledge, or see the existence and nature of their own problem and need help to acknowledge and move forward, this is called ‘being in denial’.

Habitual behaviour is actually a natural part of our lives, and many of us will have some ‘bad habits’. These can be broken because they are typically unconscious or passive action and so when we get a conscious handle on them, we can stop them. Addictions, however, are conscious and impulsive responses that are very difficult to control.

Because people with addictions are in a continuous struggle with their conscious mind to control and stop their harmful addiction, they fail to understand that the subconscious plays the key and deciding role in whether they can free themselves from their addiction. Conscious willpower alone will rarely provide you with the ability to overcome your addiction and this where Addiction Hypnotherapy is effective.

The only way to break an addiction is to re wire the brain and change the neural pathways which drive you to carry out the addiction. The most effective way of doing this is by using Addiction Hypnotherapy to work with the unconscious part of the mind because the behaviour itself is unconscious i.e. you find yourself doing it before you have had a chance to stop it and even when you know you are doing it, you still can’t stop yourself.

Addiction Hypnotherapy aims to get to the root of the problem by inducing a state of heightened awareness in the patient. In this relaxed state, the patient is more receptive to suggestions and ideas that are compatible with their goals. This allows for the hypnotherapist to offer ideas about the substance or activity that the patient is addicted to in order to help them gain control over their addiction. Addiction Hypnotherapy helps you break these addictive patterns and replaces them with new, more positive and healthy behaviours – so that you can get on and enjoy life.
